Pieta. Homage to Antonello da Messina’s Dead Christ with Three Angels

Dead Christ with Three Angels (homage to Antonello da Messina)
by Władysław Mirecki
Watercolour 2008
140 x 86 cms

Notes by Władysław Mirecki

I have developed a passion for devotional paintings of the Early Renaissance and stumbled across Antonello da Messia’s ‘Annunciation in Palermo.  Its vision of stillness and beauty held me captive.  In a book (see below) on the artist’s work I found the image (Dead Christ with Three Angels) cropped, damaged or unfinished - I could not discern from the Italian text and enquiries from the Museo Correr did not elicit response on this subject.  Besides, all dimensions quoted in various publications differed and the ratios didn’t square with the published image.  Also the omission of Christ’s feet gave a pictorial imbalance whilst losing the opportunity to show the wounds on his feet.

I modelled the feet on myself and a couple calling by (the gallery) helped with the hands.  The colouring of the Angels’ wings is based on A. da M.’s other works and their faces invented.  It was always going to be in watercolour as I could not pay full homage to A. da M. in a medium I was less competent in.  This never was intended as a copy.  To make it even more contemporary, I have given Christ body hair usually omitted from the older works.
