The Culvert, Colne Valley, Essex watercolour painting 2008 150 x 90 centimetres by Władysław Mirecki
Władysław Mirecki has had an enduring passion for the man made structure within the countryside. Continuing from his many paintings of Chappel Viaduct, Mirecki set about scouring his neighbouring countryside for old culverts, being another form of brick built construction in connection with rivers and ditches. The culvert depicted in this painting is situated in Wakes Colne across farm land in the Colne Valley, discovered after tramping across fields, after a storm.
Earlier, in his watercolour career at Chappel Galleries he went hunting for stiles and footbridges that crossed ditches, many now on The Essex Way - The Margery Allingham Walk, around Chappel - and made from modern materials to new designs, see his watercolours: ‘Steps, Footbridge and Kissing Gate’ 2011 a modern construction contrasting with ‘The Stile’ 1998 built in the old traditional way. At that time there was an Essex County Council officer of stiles and footpaths, Mr Bernard, for the villages around Chappel who regularly checked them out but this is probably a thing of the past. ‘The Stile’ was bought from his Chappel Galleries solo exhibition 1998 by an American woman, living in London whose first Mirecki purchase was ‘Trees Against Stormy Sky’ (£850) from the Singer and Friedlander, Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition in London, 1997.
‘The Culvert’ was exhibited and a prize winner in the Lynn Painter-Stainers Exhibition 2008.
