Władysław Mirecki Holme Valley, Yorkshire looking SW from Digley reservoir watercolour painting 2011.
Władysław Mirecki has been co-proprietor of Chappel Galleries since 1986. His wife Edna Mirecka whose maiden name is Battye has descended from the Battye family of the Ancient Graveship of Holme since 1545. Her direct forbear John Battye (1738-1815) was Bailiff of Scholes who with two others in the family held the position of Bailiff of Scholes for almost one hundred years. A further, recent private publication about the family has been published by John H Battye another descendant, in Canada.
In the August of 2008 Władysław (Waj) and Edna travelled by bus and train to spend several days in the Holme Valley region to investigate Edna’s forebears. It was an extended trip after the opening of the Roderic Barrett exhibition at Cartwright Hall, Bradford, curated by Edna. They lodged in a b&b in Upperthong Lane, some years later to find that it was Upperthong which was a key place where Battye families had lived.
They visited Holme, Holmfirth and Scholes, with hair raising bus travel up and down the valleys. Holme Valley is very beautiful; they made the made the circular walk around the large Digley reservoir with its stunning views all around and it was a spot looking to the South West (Map reference: Ordnance Survey Landranger number 110 grid ref 105.075) which inspired Mirecki to paint this large watercolour measuring 100 x 150 centimetres in 2011. He hopes he has been able to do justice to it. The painting was hung in the Lynn Painter-Stainers exhibition in London in 2012.
