Beach Hut areas under surveillance, watercolour, 2009, 91 x 150 cms, £11,000.

This large watercolour by Władysław Mirecki is another example of his fascination for man’s contribution or would he say intrusion to the countryside, in this case the sea side. As well as the ionic towering concrete block of luxury flats in the far distance of the painting, he observes all those prohibitions that we impose upon ourselves, such as: N0 CYCLING; BEACHHUT AREAS UNDER SURVEILLANCE supported by strong metal bars; the bright white painted parking line; concrete, tarmac, they must all go in.
At Frinton on Sea there are numerous forbidden fruits, some written some passed down through the generations for since Edwardian times Frinton has been a popular but rather exclusive coastal resort: no ice cream vans on the ‘greensward’ or promenade; no fish and chip shops in the town – one is allowed just inside what has always been called ‘The Gates’ that was the level crossing and demarcation of ‘posh’ Frinton and the wastes of land on the other side. No pubs have been allowed on this hallowed ground until recently when one public house was installed in what was the hardware shop with its marvellous original green tiled frontage, hence the pub’s name ‘The Lock and Barrel’. Definitely ‘no dogs’ – in a big way – not allowed at all on the beach during the long (hot?) summers – guide dogs exempt - fines for dog soiling, totally reasonable
Grand hotels of course are allowed although ‘The Grand’ is a nursing home now. There are avenues of large, expensive private houses and the town’s main thoroughfare to the sea front is lined with bijou shops to serve the population along with its two churches at the top.
All in all it is a most pleasant place to be, despite the rough waves of a more typical scene in early Spring, as depicted in Mirecki’s watercolour.
