Alexander Pemberton
When I began these still lives, my interest was in larger groups of objects and open compositions. This may come from years of painting landscape. Gradually the individual character of the objects came to matter and the combinations became reduced.
The objects come from around the world - India, China , Japan, Bolivia, Spain, Morocco among others, and I have been to some of those places and they do have a personal significance.
So perhaps there is a symbolism to how they arrived, the way they are placed and now sit together in my studio.
Their intimacy made a contrast to the grandness of landscape. And although they all belong to a shelf in the studio, the associations of travel allude to a richer, more expansive world. It felt important to make a record of them, a memorial to our transience.
